Vitamin B9
Other Name(s):
Folic acid; Pteroylglutamic acid( 2S) - 2 - [[4 - [(2-amino-4-oxo-1h-pteridine-6-yl) methylamino] benzoyl] amino] glutaric acid dihydrate;PGA
OVERVIEW
Acid is an important B-group water-soluble vitamin. It was isolated from spinach in 1941. It is named after its rich content in green leaves, also known as pteroylglutamic acid. There are several forms in nature. The parent compound is composed of tripterine, p-aminobenzoic acid and glutamate. Folic acid contains one or more glutamyl groups, and most of the naturally occurring folic acid is in the form of polyglutamic acid. The bioactive form of folic acid is tetrahydrofolate. In 1981, the Nomenclature Committee of the American nutritional Society (cnain) collectively referred to folic acid and related compounds with folic acid biological activity as fo lacin. Biological activity is generally expressed in weight units. Folic acid is a dark yellow substance, which is not easy to dissolve in water, and its sodium salt has high solubility. It is thermally stable in neutral and alkaline solutions, but decomposes when the temperature exceeds 100 ºC in acidic solutions. Folic acid and its sodium salt are damaged by light in solution. Folic acid isolated from liver and yeast is mainly a derivative containing three or seven glutamic acids.
USES & EFFECTIVENESS
Folic acid is a necessary substance for human body to use sugar and amino acids. It is necessary for cell growth and reproduction. In vivo, folic acid acts in the form of tetrahydrofolate, which participates in the synthesis and transformation of purine nucleic acid and pyrimidine nucleotide in vivo. Folic acid plays an important role in the manufacture of nucleic acids (ribonucleic acid, deoxyribonucleic acid). Folic acid helps protein metabolism and promotes the formation and maturation of red blood cells together with vitamin B12. It is an indispensable material for the manufacture of red blood cells. Folic acid also acts as a proliferation promoting factor for Lactobacillus casei and other microorganisms. Folic acid plays an important role in cell division and growth and the synthesis of nucleic acid, amino acid and protein. Lack of folate in human body can lead to abnormal red blood cells, increase of immature cells, anemia and decrease of white blood cells. Folic acid is an indispensable nutrient for fetal growth and development. Lack of folic acid in pregnant women may lead to low birth weight, cleft lip and palate, heart defects and so on. Lack of folic acid in the first 3 months of pregnancy can cause fetal neural tube development defects and lead to malformations.
